USDA announces possible sites for research facilities relocations

On March 12, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced a reduced list of potential locations to house the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (ERS) and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Previously, the Administration has stated its intention to relocate these functions out of Washington, D.C.

Though it is far from a short list, Deputy Secretary Steve Censky has indicated the department’s intention to have a final list of new headquarters in place by May. Twenty-eight states are still in the running, including Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Wisconsin.

Separately, a process is underway to determine if USDA has the legal or budgetary authority to relocate the agencies. Both House and Senate leadership have expressed concerns about the potential staffing impact of such a move.
