Helping growers meet the sustainable goals of processors

How Envita® benefits potato growers

(Sponsored) Growers across the world are looking for ways to be more sustainable within their crop management techniques. Some sustainability efforts include the use of cover crops, managing water use, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs and more.

Benefiting growers of various crop types, including potatoes, Envita® offers an affordable and viable alternative to synthetic fertilizers, helping growers meet not only their regenerative goals, but those of processors as well. According to Azotic, the science behind Envita inoculates plant cells with food-grade bacteria, “creating a symbiotic relationship between the potato plant and the bacteria, allowing almost any crop to fix its own nitrogen and boost yields while relying less on nitrogen fertilizer.”

As defined by Azotic, “Envita is a naturally occurring, food-grade bacteria — Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus (Gd), that was originally discovered in sugarcane. Envita forms a symbiotic relationship with the host plant and provides nitrogen to cells throughout the plant, both above and below ground, all season long.”

Midwest Regional Sales Manager for Azotic, Scott Bishop, has worked with potatoes for over 40 years in various capacities, including scouting, seed certification and more. According to Bishop, Envita has shown to significantly reduce waste for both the grower and the processor, with an increase in marketable yield.

“We are initiating trials in potatoes by looking at reducing nitrogen rates in conjunction with using Envita SC,” Bishop said. “Initially, we looked at fertility rates and focused on the ROI of the additional yield. Because of the wide range of soil types and environmental conditions that potatoes are grown in most states and all of the various regions, we are hesitant to have a one-size-fits-all approach. We would like to establish some baselines for growers to start with.

“Processors are very aware of the importance of being good stewards of the environment at their facilities, but also their raw material suppliers,” Bishop continued. “Much like what we saw with traceability in the fresh market vegetable and fruit business from a few years ago, we will be seeing sustainability practices with processing potatoes going forward.”

Key benefits of Envita

  • Consistent enhancement of marketable yield
  • Application flexibility
  • Fits your farm
  • Providing nitrogen throughout the season

“Once the Gd bacteria gets into the plant and forms a symbiotic relationship with the plant, it spreads throughout the plant to provide nitrogen directly to the cells throughout the growing season,” Bishop said.

Implementing regenerative techniques can be challenging for growers, but Envita makes it easy to use with promising results.

“Changes to a successful operation that has been constantly improved over a long period of time can be challenging,” Bishop said. “The important thing is researching to understand how it works and why it works.”
