NPC joins in comments on biotech standards

In early July, the National Potato Council (NPC) joined 35 allied food and agricultural organizations in filing comments on USDA’s National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard proposed rule. This rule was published in May with a 60-day comment period. Congress mandated the rule to be finalized in July, but the NPC said that date is unlikely to be met due to the number of comments received.

The coalition said its comments clearly outline the importance of having a single federal standard for such disclosure. The comments said “a patchwork of state laws would have caused tremendous consumer confusion, significantly disrupted supply chains and imposed unnecessary costs on U.S. consumers, farmers and manufacturers estimated to be on the range of $97.3 to $129.7 billion dollars.”

NPC has been a member of the Coalition for Safe and Affordable Food since its inception and said it strongly supports its unified industry voice for common sense laws and regulations on biotech disclosure.
