Potatoes bring the party in bowl game, New Year’s celebration

A holiday tradition returns Saturday when Georgia State battles Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The Panthers (6-6) take on the Aggies (6-6) at 3:30 p.m. EST in a matchup televised on ESPN. The contest, played on Boise State’s famous blue turf, is sponsored by the Idaho Potato Commission.

Founded in 1997, the bowl (which has undergone a few name changes) generates nearly $1 million in direct economic impact for the facilities and charities involved, according to its website.

Tickets are available online.

The spud-themed holiday festivities don’t end when the last second ticks off the clock. The 11th annual Idaho Potato Drop will take place at the Idaho state capitol on New Year’s Eve.

The free event, which supports local arts, businesses and charities, kicks off with live musical performs at 6 p.m. Participants can take part in the Urban-Air 2023-2024 ski and snowboard exhibition at a cutting-edge snow park featuring custom-built features from Olympic Snow Park designers Justin and Mason Kennedy.

Local food and beverages will be available, and the Big Idaho Potato Tour truck and Spuddy Buddy will be making the festive rounds during the Idaho Potato Rise. A Very Important Potato room will offer guests craft cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and raffle prizes as the crowd counts down to midnight.
