USDA forecasts increase in Michigan potato production

Michigan’s 2024 potato production is forecast to be 22.2 million cwt., an increase of 3% from a year ago, according to USDA projections.

Planted acres, at 51,000, increased 1,000 acres from 2023, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office. Harvested acres, at 50,500, rose 1,500 from 2023. Average yield, forecasted at 440 cwt per acre, remained unchanged from the previous year.

The first potato stocks estimate for the 2024 Michigan crop year will be released Dec. 18.

Nationally, production of potatoes for the 2024 crop year is forecast at 418 million cwt., down 5% from last year. Planted acreage, at 928,000 acres, is down 1% from the June estimate and down 4% from 2023.

Area harvested, at 923,100 acres, is down 4% from the previous year. Forecasted yield, at 453 cwt. per acre, is down 5 cwt. from last year.
