United Fresh event to feature DOJ session

A workshop at this year’s United Fresh Washington Conference will focus on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) approach to criminal investigations and prosecution enforcing laws under the Food, Drugs and Cosmetic Act (FD&C). Jeffrey Steger, assistant director in the Consumer Protection Branch, U.S. DOJ, will discuss the department’s approach to enforcement. Steger will be joined by attorney Doug Fellman, partner, Hogan Lovells US LLP, who will translate what that means for the fresh produce industry.

The Food Police Are Coming – Liability Concerns and DOJ Enforcement” is one of six workshops on business issues at the 2016 United Fresh Washington Conference, Sept. 12-14 in Washington, D.C.

As assistant director in the DOJ’s Consumer Protection Branch, Steger’s responsibilities include civil and criminal enforcement of the FD&C Act and other consumer protection statutes. Steger started with the DOJ in 1994, following a clerkship for Judge Jane Roth on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He worked for the United States Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs from 1986 to 1993. He received his BA in economics from Brandeis University in 1984 and his JD from Georgetown University in 1993.

For more than 25 years, Doug Fellman has represented public and private companies regarding government and internal investigations, and corporate governance matters. Fellman received his bachelor’s degree from John Hopkins University in 1984 and his JD from Cornell University School of Law in 1987.

This year’s Washington Conference will bring attendees face-to- face with members of Congress, their staff and regulatory officials. The conference also features the Rising Leaders Program for up-and-coming industry employees.
