Restrain launches new ethylene potato storage technology

Potato storage technology company Restrain has launched a new solution featuring three advanced steps in its ethylene treatment solutions.

The company’s Precision Ethylene Treatment (PET) technology introduces and helps maintain optimal levels of ethylene, a natural plant hormone, to prevent sprouting and preserve sugar levels, according to a news release.

The innovations include three new features:

  • The sensor: A newly designed ethylene sensor boosts accuracy and response time while excluding interference from other molecules, ensuring precise and ethylene sensing. The sensor also measures carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity.
  • The pulse: A low-dosing pulse system delivers controlled ethylene at parts per billion, below sensor detection levels. The system prepares potatoes for higher ethylene levels, suppressing sprouting while minimizing respiration to protect fry color and reduce weight loss.
  • The control: A control management system employs algorithms to establish and maintain precise ethylene levels in commercial storage facilities, gradually increasing ethylene levels to maximize storage outcomes.

Restrain’s patent-pending PET technology also reduces fuel consumption and lowers operational cost and environmental impact, according to the release.

History of innovation

Restrain has used ethylene to improve potato storage for two decades, according to the release, with systems that integrate into commercial bulk, box, ambient and refrigerated storage facilities without costly modifications. Catalytic generators designed and manufactured in-house since 2017 help enhance safety and ensure quality.

By 2023, Restrain integrated iCloud technology for real-time remote monitoring and adaptive storage control.

Based in England, the company provides solutions for major french fry manufacturers and fresh potato suppliers — a role that has grown since the 2020 European ban on chlorpropham, according to the release.
