Longtime Philadelphia establishment wins Herr’s Foods contest

The winner of Herr’s Foods’ third Flavored by Philly contest celebrates a Philadelphia culinary staple. Romano’s Stromboli Special Hot Chips beat out two other finalists to join the snack food company’s line of chips crafted for the city.

The three flavor finalists, submitted by fans and announced in June, also included Talluto’s Cheese Ravioli and Marinara and Mom-Mom’s Kitchen Potato Pierogi, according to a news release. The 2024 contest saw a 50% year-over-year increase in votes, with 26,360 potato chip enthusiasts casting ballots.

Romano’s Original Stromboli, a restaurant and pizzeria, was founded in 1950 by Nazzereno Romano and is under the third generation of family ownership.

“Their creative interpretation of a beloved Philadelphia classic truly captures the essence of the Flavored by Philly contest,” Ed Herr, chair and CEO of Herr’s, said in the release. “At Herr’s, we are dedicated to celebrating local businesses and the unique flavors that make Philadelphia a culinary destination, and partnering with Romano’s Stromboli to bring their cherished dish to snack enthusiasts has been a thrill.”

Romano’s Stromboli receives $10,000 for the winning entry, while the two other finalist each receive $2,500.

“This recognition is truly humbling, and we’re excited to continue sharing our flavors with snack enthusiasts everywhere,” Peter Romano, owner of Romano’s Stromboli, said in the release.
