Northern Plains field day to visit locations in North Dakota

Potato research from North Dakota State University, the University of Minnesota and USDA-ARS will be highlighted during the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association (NPPGA) Field Day on Thursday, Aug. 24.  This year, the field day tour will again travel to three locations along North Dakota Highway 18.

The day will begin at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at Hoverson Farms near Larimore. Research presentations will begin at 8:15 a.m. The breakfast is courtesy of Hoverson Farms, J.R. Simplot and the Potato Associates.

Lunch and research presentations will be at the Forest River Colony near Inkster beginning at noon at the nearby NPPGA irrigated research site. The lunch will be prepared by the Forest River Colony and is sponsored by J.R. Simplot.

The last stop will be at Oberg Farms near Hoople starting at 5 p.m. The final stop will include research poster presentations and an evening barbecue and beverages sponsored by the Potato Associates.

Potato research and NDSU Extension Service activities are occurring throughout North Dakota and Minnesota, according to Andy Robinson, NDSU and University of Minnesota Extension potato agronomist. The work addresses potato breeding, nutrient management, and disease, insect and weed pests.

“The research is focused on improving potato production for North Dakota and Minnesota growers,” says Robinson. “However, the implications of the research can affect production practices throughout the U.S. and world.”

For more information on the field day, contact Robinson at 701- 231-8732 or by email, or call Northern Plains Potato Growers Association at 218-773-3633.
