Szawlowski Farms in Massachusetts donates 140,000 pounds of potatoes during harvest season

Szawlowski Potato Farms made sure spuds were on plates for many more meals of Massachusetts residents than they would have been otherwise during the holiday season, thanks to 140,000-pound donation.

The 5,000-acre farm in Hatfield, Massachusetts — about 25 miles north of Springfield — made the donation to The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts during the fall growing season. The organization figures it accounted for about 116,000 meals.

For the generosity, FBOWB named Szawlowski Farms its Farmer of the Year. Recognition included an award, certificate and letter of thanks. It read:

“Congratulations on the being The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts 2018 Farmer of the Year!

“We thank you for your donation of 140,000 pounds of fresh produce — the equivalent of 116,667 meals — during the 2018 growing season. That food ended up on the dinner tables of thousands of food insecure people across the region through our member agencies, our Brown Bag: Food for Elders program, and our Mobile Food Bank.

“We’re proud to call you a partner in our efforts to create a western Massachusetts where no one goes hungry (sic) everyone has access to healthy food.”

Szawlowski Potato Farms has been in business for more than 108 years. Its history includes five generations of the family, which still owns and operates it. Szawlowski Farms grow russets, whites, reds and golds. The business includes year-round packing and shipping as well.
