Syngenta scholarship winner

Katie McKenna, of Mapleton, Maine, is the 2013 recipient of the $5,000 Syngenta Potato Scholarship.

McKenna is a freshman majoring in biology at Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio.

Growing up in the center of potato production in Aroostook County, McKenna worked for several years on Maine potato harvests and developed a deep appreciation for the potato industry.

Scholarship candidates wrote essays to the following question: How can the potato industry build and sustain consumer demand for potatoes?”

McKenna’s winning essay proposed promoting potato consumption to specific communities and creating awareness campaigns about the nutritional benefits of the potato.

“By reminding the general population of the health benefits rather than detriments of potato products, the industry could be built and sustained,” McKenna wrote.
