Aug 7, 2025Regional reports provide nationwide retail insight
A new Potatoes USA analysis provides regional insights into retail sales in eight U.S. markets. The reports are part of a national effort by the national potato board to increase engagement and collaboration with retailers.
“This initiative is about helping retailers uncover opportunities in their own region,” said Nick Bartelme, Potatoes USA global retail development manager. “Potato performance varies widely across the country. By breaking the data down regionally, we’re giving retailers a sharper lens on consumer demand in their markets — insights that inform how they merchandise, promote, and prioritize potato products in store.
“Whether it’s capitalizing on rising trends like medleys or tailoring product assortments to meet local preferences, these reports support more precise, growth-oriented strategies.”
Key takeaways include:
- California showed a preference for 5-pound bags and an increase in yellow potato sales, with medley potatoes also posting volume growth.
- Great Lakes retailers saw year-over-year growth in dollar and volume sales, especially for yellow potatoes and smaller pack sizes.
- Mid-south volume remained steady, with medleys and petite potatoes outperforming national averages.
- Northeast data revealed strong consumer interest in red and yellow varieties, with bulk and value pack formats remaining popular.
- The Southeast reported robust gains in dollar sales despite slight volume softening, suggesting room for premiumization and in-store marketing.
- The West led in total category dollar sales, with significant contributions from russets, yellows and medleys.
