Organic potato stocks starting to run low

Stocks of organic potatoes are starting to dwindle, according to distributors in Colorado and Wisconsin.

In an article by the Organic Produce Network, Lonnie Gillespie of Farm Fresh Direct in Colorado and Ron Greenwood of RPE Inc. in Wisconsin both say their organic supply from the 2021 harvest is starting run low. Once those stocks run out, they will turn to organics from Arizona and California to be harvested later this spring.

Gillespie said the heat that hindered yields for conventional potatoes in many part of the U.S. also did so for organics. She added that it’s unclear if organic production will be up or down in 2022.

“This year we are seeing a shift. There are growers getting out of organics, and there seems to be just as many trying to get in. We will just have to see how it plays out when planting begins (in late spring),” Gillespie told OPN.
