NPC supports chief agricultural negotiator nominee, new active ingredient

The National Potato Council joined dozens of other agricultural organizations in expressing support for Julie Callahan, nominated for Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

In a Sept. 5 letter to Mike Crapo, chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, and Ron Wyden, committee ranking member, the groups noted Callahan’s service at the Office of the United States Trade Representative since 2016,  overseeing agricultural affairs and commodity policy.

“She has worked repeatedly with our organizations on behalf of American agriculture to level the playing field and knock down unfair barriers to trade,” the letter read in part. “Swiftly confirming her and filling this position is vitally important as negotiations continue on reciprocal tariffs and access for U.S. agricultural products with dozens of countries.”

Other signatories included American Pistachio Growers, the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, the North American Blueberry Council, the U.S. Apple Association and the Washington State Fruit Commission.

NPC supports active ingredient registration

NPC also submitted comments to the Environmental Protection Agency supporting the registration of a new active ingredient, Fluoxapiprolin.

Fluoxapiprolin, as a FRAC Code 49, will provide another mode of action to control late blight in rotation or tank mixed with other fungicides, according to the organization.

Bayer has applied for the registration of Xivana 20 SC (suspension concentrate) liquid product as a solo fluoxapiprolin formulation for foliar use. Xivana 20 SC will be recommended for use in tank mixes with any second oomycete effective fungicide with a different mode of action to reduce the risk of resistance development.

“The body of evidence provided in the docket supports the registration of fluoxapiprolin as it will provide flexibility for growers to broaden their spectrum of disease control and to manage fungicide resistance,” NPC said in its comments.
