May 20, 2025NPC calls for elimination of tariffs on US potato exports to Vietnam
The National Potato Council called for the elimination of tariffs on U.S. potatoes and potato products to Vietnam in a letter to top trade officials.
In the May 16 missive, NPC estimated that an agreement eliminating the tariffs would increase U.S. potato exports by $30 million a year.
“As you are aware, the U.S. is at a disadvantage with other countries in accessing the valuable export market of Vietnam,” NPC wrote to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. “The tariffs applied against U.S. potatoes and potato products are a significant constraint for American competitiveness in that market.”
The letter (.pdf) mentioned that Vietnam had previously agreed to eliminate tariffs, which include a 20% tax on fresh potatoes, in the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement from which the U.S. withdrew in 2017, “so the notion of restoring those reductions should not be challenging for them.”
