Mobile irrigation lab to provide on-farm analysis, tips for growers

Michigan State University Extension’s new Mobile Irrigation lab is hitting the road to help growers evaluate and improve irrigation system efficiency at no cost.

Issues with pressure, flow rate or sprinkler uniformity can lead to uneven water application, wasted energy and reduced crop performance, according to MSU Extension. The on-farm mobile lab measures pressure, flow rate and water application uniformity under real operating conditions to identify potential system issues and maintenance needs.

Experts will provide scheduling enhancement recommendations as well as tips to improve water use efficiency and energy savings. In addition, cost-share funds are available to assist with irrigation system retrofits or upgrades based on lab findings.

An online form is available to request a lab visit. Contact Riley Johnson at [email protected] for more information.
