May 9, 2007Michigan Potato Commission’s Referendum Passes
Michigan’s potato growers have elected to continue the Michigan Potato Industry Commission’s (MPIC) activities for another five years. Associations in the state are required to conduct referendums every five years. More than 50 percent of growers and 50 percent of total cwt. must approve the referendum in order for it to pass.
Of the 23 ballots cast by Michigan potato growers, 19 voted yes, representing 90 percent of the state’s production volume.
MPIC was created in 1970 to promote Michigan potatoes through research, promotion, advertising and market development and expansion. The assessment rate is 3.5 cents per cwt. paid by the grower and 1.5 cents per cwt. paid by the first handler.
