Belgian potato producer Agristo has begun site preparation for its $450 million processing facility in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
The company’s first U.S. plant, on a 360-acre plot, is expected to open in January 2028 and create up to 300 jobs.
A ceremonial groundbreaking, heralding full-scale construction, is set for April 2026, according to the company.
Agristo, which produces frozen potato products for more than 80 countries, said the plant will require 20,000-plus acres of potatoes to support operations. Local seed growers are scaling up production of the company’s preferred potato varieties, with the fall 2027 crop earmarked to supply the facility for its planned opening.
The facility was announced in January, with Grand Forks officials touring Agristo operations in Belgium in April.
The Grand Forks facility will produce an array of frozen offerings, including French fries, waffle fries, hashbrowns and tater tots.
