WSU reports potato tuberworm moth challenges

Potato growers in Washington’s Columbia Basin are being alerted to two key pests as the 2024 growing season nears its end.

The latest WSU Potato Alerts reports that potato tuberworm (PTW) moths have been found in traps across the region, with some areas seeing very high numbers.

PTW damage typically occurs when larvae move from leaves to tubers after vine senescence. To reduce the risk, experts suggest applying insecticides four to eight weeks before harvest and minimizing the time tubers remain under dead vines.

Potato psyllids, another pest of concern, were detected in 20% of monitored fields, but none tested positive for the bacteria that cause zebra chip disease.

For detailed maps, pest management advice, and historical data, growers can visit WSU’s Potato Decision Aid System. To subscribe to the alerts, contact Carrie Wohleb at [email protected] or (509) 707-3510.
