World Potato Congress president addresses Chinese Potato Expo

World Potato Congress president Peter VanderZaag addressed the Chinese Potato Expo last month, sharing details of the upcoming WPC to be held next June in Adelaide, Australia.

VanderZaag applauded work to improve potato production in the mountainous regions of Western China in his remarks at the expo. He also attended the seventh Global Leaders in Agricultural Science and Technology (GLAST), a forum which drew nearly 600 participants from 49 countries, according to a news release.

Among those in attendance at the Chinese Potato Expo were Chen Ping, vice governor of Shandong, and H.E. Marco Balarezo, Ambassador of Peru to China.

“While an invaluable opportunity time to reconnect with colleagues, it was challenging to hear about the status of the global food supply situation as we work together in addressing the UN’s sustainable development goals,” VanderZaag said in the release. “Potatoes will need to be a key player in helping meet the United Nations SDGs.”

The Global Hybrid (Diploid) Potato Alliance was officially launched at GLAST, held in Sanya, China.

The 2024 WPC will be held June 23-26.
