Washington growers agree to contracts with Lamb-Weston and Simplot

Washington state potato growers voted to accept contracts from processors Lamb-Weston and the J.R. Simplot Co. for the 2013 season.

Dale Lathim, executive director of the Potato Growers of Washington (PGW), said that PGW members had voted unanimously to accept contracts offered with a two percent increase from the 2012 contracts.

The actual increase in the contract on a weighted average basis is just over two percent,” Lathim said. “Almost all of it is base price. A slight amount is in incentives. Simplot wanted bigger sizes.”

Lathim said that he anticipates that acreage for 2013 to remain about the same as 2012 acreage.

“We won’t be growing for other areas but we anticipate what we’re contracted for in our normal customer base should stay the same,” Lathim said.
