USDA-NASS releases 2021 potato acreage estimate, acres up slightly

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released updated acreage estimates June 30.

According to NASS calculations, potato planted and harvested acreage in the U.S. is expected to be up 2% from last year. Planted acres in the 13 major potato-producing states are 943,000, with expected harvest acres to be at 935,200, as of mid-summer.

NASS totals come in slightly below recent estimates of North American Potato Market News, which reported 946,500 planted acres in its June 3 newsletter.

While planted acreage is up from 2020, it’s still below the pre-pandemic levels of 2018 and 2019, when acres were in the 959,000 to 963,000 range.

According to the June 30 USDA-NASS report, expected harvest acres are currently projected at:

  • Idaho — 314,500 acres
  • Washington — 160,000
  • North Dakota — 71,000
  • Wisconsin — 66,000
  • Maine — 55,500
  • Colorado — 52,700
  • Michigan — 46,000
  • Oregon — 45,000
  • Minnesota — 43,000
  • California — 28,700
  • Florida — 21,300
  • Nebraska — 20,800
  • Texas — 10,700
  • TOTAL — 935,200 expected harvest acres (up from 914,100 last year). Source: USDA-NASS.
