Potato growers produced 412.06 cwt of potatoes during 2025 — 9.11 million cwt less than in 2024, or a 2.2% decline, according to USDA estimates.

USDA data show that nine of the 13 reporting states posted reduced production in 2025, though the department put the 2025 national average potato yield at 461 cwt per acre, 6 cwt more than the 2024 average yield.

Michigan sees acreage drop

Michigan’s harvested area totaled an estimated 47,000 acres — 500 acres less than last year, according to a report compiled by North American Potato Market News (NAPMN) for the Michigan Potato Industry Commission

At 430 cwt per acre, the 2025 Michigan yield estimate matches the 2024 yield and puts Michigan’s potato crop at 20.21 million cwt, down 1.1% from 2024 production.

Total U.S. table potato movement has been strong ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, according to the NAPMN report. However, increased shipments from Idaho have resulted in reduced sales from most other shipping regions.

Idaho’s shipments reached 1.07 million cwt during the week ending Nov. 15. That is 249,000 cwt, or 30.4%, more than packers shipped a year earlier. Michigan’s shipments were down 44.9% for the week. Other major shipping regions posted 4.4% to 35.5% reductions, according to the report, with table potato supplies backing up in most areas.
