US trade rep to travel to Mexico for second round of USMCA talks

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will travel to Mexico on April 20 to continue discussions to review the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

Mexico’s economy minister Marcelo Ebrard said in an April 16 Reuters report that the two will work “all day Monday. There will be sessions to review each sector one by one.”

This will be the second round of USMCA talks. Greer and Ebrard met in Washington last month.

In January, the U.S. and Mexico agreed to begin talks on possible USMCA reforms.

Under the trilateral trade deal that took effect in 2020, the U.S., Mexico and Canada must launch a joint review of the trade pact by July 1, its sixth anniversary. The countries must confirm their intention to renew it for a 16-year period or make modifications.

A 40-member coalition formed in support of the agreement in February.
