Shoppers who buy fresh potatoes spend nearly double the amount of non-potato retail customers, according to a new study.

Data analyzed by market research firm Circana for Potatoes USA found that fresh potato buyers spend $98.58 per trip, compared to the $49.86 spent by shoppers without potatoes in their baskets.

The study (.pdf) also found every $1 spent on fresh potatoes unlocks $24.94 in additional spending.

Fresh potato sales generated $1.31 billion more in 2025 annual sales than in 2019, according to the data.

From January 2025 to December 2025, fresh potato volume sales totaled $4.59 billion, accounting for 4.4% of total produce dollar sales and 9.4% of total vegetable dollar sales, the study found.

Fresh potatoes, purchased nearly 11 times per year, ranked sixth out of 130 fresh produce categories for dollar sales.
