Report: US potato imports increase

U.S. potato imports increase for the first three quarters of the marketing year due to the strong dollar and increasing world supplies, Potatoes USA reports.

In summary, total imports are up 13 percent on a metric ton volume basis (up 10.8 percent on fresh weights volume basis). This is being driven by a 19 percent increase in fresh imports, a 12 percent increase in frozen and a 21 percent increase in seed potatoes for the July 2015 – March 2016 period.

All of the fresh and seed imports are from Canada as well as the vast majority of frozen product. Canada is the largest supplier of dehydrated potatoes as well, but there is also substantial quantities of product from the EU, according to the association.
