Referendum on MPIC this month

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is conducting a referendum among Michigan potato growers on continuation of the Michigan Potato Industry Commission (MPIC) that runs through Friday, April 27.

The MPIC was established in 1970. By law its covenant must be renewed every five years. For the MPIC to be renewed, more than 50 percent of the producer votes cast, representing more than 50 percent of the total hundredweight represented on the cast ballots, must favor approval.

In 2007 a total of 23 valid ballots were cast in the referendum with 19 growers, representing almost 4 million hundredweight, voting yes, and four growers, representing 435,845 hundredweight, voting no.

Eligible growers with questions or who have not received a ballot should contact MDARD at 800-292-3939.
