Potatoes & mushrooms: Side Delights teams up with Mushroom Council on marketing promotion

Side Delights potato farmers have teamed up with mushroom growers to create an in-store promotion with seven original recipes for “A Week’s Worth of Yum.” The program includes a point-of-sale merchandiser with a tear-off recipe card featuring a recipe and a URL to download the Week’s Worth of Yum e-book.

Potatoes and mushrooms work naturally together to create a nutritious twist, added texture and a depth of flavor to consumer favorites like macaroni and cheese, frittatas and even lasagna.

The partnership pairs mushrooms with Side Delights potatoes, inclusive of Steamables, the nation’s No. 1 selling branded microwavable potato product line. The two nutritional powerhouse partners are helping to increase awareness on the health and nutritional benefits of potatoes and mushrooms. Both potatoes and mushrooms fit into the growing flexitarian and plant-based lifestyle as more nutritionists and medical experts stress the importance of incorporating more vegetables into consumer’s daily diets.

“This program is a win-win for consumers and retailers, pairing two high-nutrient vegetables in creative, delicious ways, drawing consumers in-store with eye-catching promotions and recipes.“ said Kathleen Triou, President and CEO of Fresh Solutions Network. “The Weeks’ Worth of Yum in-store program is available now with target execution in stores in September for Mushroom Lovers Month. It is available only from the partners of Fresh Solutions Network and your fresh mushroom supplier.”

A recent New York Times article on mushrooms refers to them as “a powerhouse of nutrition” pointing out that the cholesterol-free vegetable is low in fat and calories and contains numerous minerals and vitamins, including copper, potassium, magnesium, zinc in addition to antioxidants like selenium and glutathione, believed to protect cells from damage and reduce chronic disease and inflammation.

“Mushrooms make great meals even better, whether it’s for the ever-growing ‘blenditarian’ movement to mix mushrooms with meat for healthier, more sustainable dishes — or with the iconic potato through this exciting and creative partnership with Side Delights,” said Heather Harter, Industry Communications Coordinator with the Mushroom Council. “Potatoes and mushrooms are a perfect pair, as these delicious recipes demonstrate.”

Fat-free, sodium-free, cholesterol-free potatoes are extremely rich in Vitamin C, potassium and fiber. Potatoes also have one of the highest overall antioxidant activity among vegetables and contain glutathione, an antioxidant that may help protect against some cancers. A medium-sized potato contains 26 grams of carbohydrates, only 9% of the recommended daily value.
