Potato acreage in Canada looks to be steady

Potato acreage in Canada is expected to see a slight uptick, according to data reported by United Potato Growers of Canada (UPGC).

UPGC has this year’s acres at 363,470, which is 0.38% higher than 2019. Data from Quebec was incomplete and based on estimate, however, which may lead to final numbers being altered once the acreage numbers there are confirmed.

“Given the cuts in processing volume, that were handed out at, or before, planting time, industry had expected a decrease in planted acres,” said UPGC General Manager Kevin MacIsaac through a release. “Total acreage is estimated at 363,470 acres. Canada’s acreage peaked at 457,500 acres in 2003.”

In comparison, U.S. acres are expected to be down in the range of 5-6%, according to respective reports from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service and North American Potato Market News. The USDA-NASS has U.S. acres at 921,000, while NAPMN has them at 908,000.

On July 22, NAPMN published its Canadian acres projection at 363,371, which is based on Statistics Canada and Quebec Potato Growers Federation data.
