Jul 1, 2024NPC adopts resolution calling for farm bill passage at summer meeting
At its 2024 Summer Meeting, the National Potato Council board adopted a resolution urging the passing of a farm bill before the end of the year and encouraged growers to take part in a seed piece treatment study.
The meeting, led by Bob Mattive, NPC president and Colorado potato grower, took place June 25-28 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
On June 27, the board adopted a resolution urging Congressional action on a farm bill, noting the current bill has been expired for nearly two years and that the cost of a new bill is likely to increase next year. The resolution also stated that “U.S. agriculture cannot continue to lose ground to foreign competitors with our federal policy.”
In addition, the board approved a recommendation offered by the Executive Committee encouraging growers to participate in a registrant-led study to determine worker exposure levels of Mancozeb seed treatment. The Mancozeb Potato Seed Piece Treatment Study is being conducted by the Mancozeb Task Force.
The meeting included a general session at Colorado State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, lunch at CSU’s Canvas Stadium, a bus tour of CSU’s Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center and a tour of the Morning Fresh Dairy Farm, a fifth-generation family dairy and supplier for Noosa yogurt.
“It was a privilege and an honor to welcome the industry to Fort Collins and tour my alma mater,” Mattive said in a news release. “We appreciate Dr. Amy Charkowski, CSU’s research associate dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences, for bringing together such an impressive group of researchers and staff to speak to our group. Thanks to all the sponsors from across the country and local to Colorado for their support of this important meeting for our industry.”
