New website offers late blight information, resources

The Michigan Potato Industry Commission has created a webpage to provide growers with assistance in identifying and managing late blight.

The page contains information on the pathogen, what to do in the case of an outbreak and fungicide recommendations, as well as links to organizations that monitor and report confirmed cases.

Late blight of potato and tomato caused by Phytophthora infestans is a devastating global that led to the Irish potato famine in 1845. Under favorable weather conditions, tomato and potato crops can be destroyed within days if left untreated.

Yield losses caused by late blight and the cost of control measures have been estimated to exceed $6.7 billion annually.
