New Michigan Potato Industry Commission chair elected

Phil Gusmano of Better Made Snack Foods Inc. of Detroit was elected the new chair of the Michigan Potato Industry Commission at its Aug. 11 meeting as part of the Montcalm County Field Day. He succeeds Brian Sackett of Sackett Potatoes of Mecosta, who completed his second three-year term on the Commission July 1 and did not seek reappointment.

Gusmano represents the processing sector on the nine-member commission. He currently serves Better Made as vice president of purchasing, handling all contracts with suppliers including securing potatoes, which by company policy are sourced from Michigan except for availability limitations. Earlier he was a district sales manager and production manager with the company. He is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a B.A. in marketing and an MBA.

The other commission members are Travis Horkey of Dundee and Don Kitchen of Elmira from the fresh sector; Ted Hanson of Cornell and John Maker of Elmira from the seed sector; Wayne Leep (vice-chair) of Martin and Kevin Storm of Cass City from the chip sector; Ben Sklarczyk of Johannesburg serving at large and Matt Wilkes of Edmore as the fresh shipper.
