Feb 18, 2025MPIC names award winners including scholarship recipient
The Michigan Potato Industry Commission (MPIC) has named three award recipients, including the winner of its annual $1,000 scholarship.
Lauryn Dailey of Edmore, Michigan, is a student at Michigan State University’s Institute of Agriculture Technology and Montcalm Community College.

She expects to complete her degree in agricultural operations in spring 2026.
Dailey planned a teaching career, but a summer job opportunity in 2023 as a potato scout for Kipp Farm Services changed her career trajectory, according to MPIC.
Stephanie Kipp, co-owner of Kipp Farm Services, said Dailey, despite having little knowledge of potato farming, excelled quickly.
“Lauryn worked diligently, learned quickly, and demonstrated a strong curiosity to understand all aspects of the job,” Kipp said. “She (now) contributes to various aspects of our business, including data management, potato scouting, trials, custom harvesting, input procurement, and customer service. She has continuously demonstrated a strong aptitude for learning and applying new concepts, and her passion for agriculture is evident in everything she does.”
Sackett wins Distinguished Service Award
MPIC recognized Brian Sackett of Sackett Potatoes with its 2024 Distinguished Service Award, given annually to an individual for dedication to Michigan’s potato sector.
Sackett was presented with the award during the recent Winter Potato Conference in Grand Rapids.
“For over 30 years, Brian has exemplified the very essence of leadership, commitment and vision as the chair of the Storage and Handling Committee,” Mike Phillips, MPIC chair, said in a statement. “Under his guidance, the committee has been a driving force behind the successful commercialization of countless potato varieties. His keen insight and innovative problem-solving have helped shape the future of our industry, ensuring that growers and stakeholders alike have access to the best tools and knowledge available.”
Sackett Potatoes, based in Mecosta, Michigan and founded in 1904, is a multi-state, family-owned farming operation that spans six generations.
Techmark named Outstanding Industry Partner
MPIC also recognized Techmark with its 2024 Outstanding Industry Partner award, presented to a non-grower organization that has been a key collaborator with MPIC in achieving the commission’s goals.
“Techmark is an international agricultural engineering company specializing in storage and production systems,” Phillips said. “Techmark applies technologies that create positive returns for growers and the industry. The Techmark team understands the importance of partnering with growers and their organizations to become stronger through technology and innovation. They have designed, installed and serviced agricultural storage and production systems around the world.”
