Michigan potato farmer dies at 56

Erwin Joseph Styma II, a well-known Michigan potato farmer and community leader, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 14, 2024.

Erwin Joseph Styma II, a well-known Michigan potato farmer and community leader, died on Sept. 14 at age 56.

A co-owner of R&E Farm in Posen, Styma worked alongside his family to expand Styma Potato Farms, which ships potatoes across the Midwest and eastern U.S.

His contributions to the variety assessment of potatoes for northern growers were recognized widely, according to a news release from Michigan Potatoes.

“His passing leaves a significant void, not only in the industry but in the lives of all who had the privilege of working alongside him,” said Kelly Turner, executive director of the Michigan Potato Industry Commission.
