Aug 9, 2024Longtime Maine potato industry advocate honored
Longtime Maine potato industry advocate Don Flannery received recognition for his 27 years of service at the Maine Potato Board’s annual meeting last month.
Flannery became assistant executive director of the board in 1997 and helped the board secure federal and state funding for agricultural projects, including the construction of a potato research facility and the development of infrastructure for processing plants. His service has helped Maine’s potato industry grow into a sustainable leader in the competitive market.
Two U.S. senators lauded Flannery’s career at the meeting in advance of his retirement.
“Don has been a good friend and has done an absolutely amazing job with the potato board. He’s going to be greatly missed,” Angus King said.
Susan Collins highlighted Flannery’s role in reserving the agricultural research lab at the University of Maine and blocking restrictions against potatoes in school programs.
“I wish Don all the best as he embarks on his well-deserved retirement,” she said.
