IOM recommends white potatoes in WIC program

The National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended that the USDA allow white potatoes be an eligible vegetable in the USDA’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

At the request of the USDA the IOM is undertaking a comprehensive review of the food packages used in the WIC program.

In the first of three reports, the IOM committee evaluated the 2009 regulation that excluded white potatoes from purchase with the WIC cash value voucher.

One of the conclusions in the report stated: Intake consumption of white potatoes could improve potassium intake for both women and children.”
