Industry leader dies at 100

Louis E. Knoflicek, of Alliance, Nebraska, died on Jan. 24, 2015, at the age of 100.

Knoflicek was a leader in the development of the potato industry in western Nebraska. In 1945, he began working for the Nebraska certified potato growers association in Scottsbluff.

In 1963, Knoflicek and Ed Weaver, of Lincoln, Nebraska, established the Western Potatoes in Alliance. Western Potatoes currently has locations in Alliance, Gordon, Nebraska, Garden City, Kansas and Holyoke, Colorado.

Knoflicek served on The Potato Association of America and the Nebraska Potato Development Committee. In 1980, he was awarded the Panhandle Outstanding Service to Agriculture award by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research and Extension Center.
