Growers approve referendum to continue MPIC

Michigan potato growers approved a referendum to continue the Michigan Potato Industry Commission.
Twenty-three valid ballots were cast in the referendum. All 23 growers, representing 7.2 million cwt., voted to continue the MPIC. For the referendum to pass, a majority of growers voting, who represent the bulk of the cwt. sold the previous year, must approve continuation of the MPIC.
The MPIC will continue for an additional five years beginning July 1, 2012, and ending June 30, 2017.
MPIC funding is provided through an assessment of 3.5 cents per cwt. for the growers and 1.5 cents per cwt. for the first handler.
