The deadline to apply for the annual Potato Leadership, Education and Advancement Foundation (Potato LEAF) scholarship is Friday.
The $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student (master’s degree or higher) conducting research to improve the future of the U.S. potato industry.
Areas of basic or applied research can improve potato production efficiency, address pest management and disease issues, increase consumer benefits from potato consumption, or advance the competitiveness of the U.S. potato industry.
The scholarship will be awarded in August 2023 for use in the 2023-24 academic year.

Past recipients include Paige Hickman, a Ph.D. student at the University of Idaho studying plant-parasitic nematodes, insect pests, and potato diseases; Thilani Jayakody, a graduate student in the Michigan State University’s Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences researching genome editing; and Jeewan Pandey, a graduate student in Texas A&M University’s Department of Horticultural Sciences researching the application of DNA-based markers in potato breeding to speed the development of new varieties requiring fewer pesticide applications.
