Crop has North Dakota growers optimistic

With a half dozen or so Red River Valley fresh shippers up and running, the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association said its early reports show a fine-looking crop of red and yellow potatoes in the Red River Valley.

With the new crop comes a new ad campaign for the 2018 season. This ad will appear in national trade puiblications and their affiliated digital formats.

Chris Bjorneby of Lone Wolf Farms in Minto, North Dakota reported to NPPGA that his red potatoes look excellent.

“Near ideal growing conditions the first half of the summer, followed by an extended dry spell, had growers guessing to the size and the quality of the 2018 fresh crop,” the NPPGA wrote in a release. “There is no doubt the dry stretch trimmed yields, especially in the northern valley, but growers have been pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of much of the crop.”

While some plants are already shipping, Bjorneby and some other diversified growers need to wrap up the beet harvest before their shipping season can begin.
