Applications for potato breeding research funding through the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture must be submitted by Aug. 14.
The Special Research Grants Program supports regional potato research, Extension activities and outreach focusing on the development, testing and release of superior commercial potato varieties using classical breeding and advanced molecular and biotechnological approaches.
The awards range from $500,000 to $1.5 million.
The development and utilization of high-throughput methods that address significant or emergent issues of importance to the U.S. potato industry is highly encouraged. Aspects of evaluation, screening, and testing must support commercial variety development and release of superior materials to commercial producers as soon as possible.
Eligible applicants include:
- State agricultural experiment stations
- Land-grant colleges and universities
- Research foundations established by land-grant colleges and universities
- Colleges and universities receiving funds under the McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Act
- Accredited schools or colleges of veterinary medicine
