2017 Census of Agriculture data for specialty crops now online

Idaho, Washington and Wisconsin rank near the top among states that dedicate acreage to specialty crop vegetables, including potatoes.

The specialty crops data shows selected 2017 Census of Agriculture statistics about specialty crops defined as “fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops (including floriculture).”

USDA logoEligible plants must be cultivated or managed and used by people for food, medicinal purposes and/or aesthetic gratification to be considered specialty crops.

California ranked first in farms (4,868) and acres (923,920) that grow specialty crop vegetables. Idaho was second in vegetable acreage at 353,680, followed by Washington (313,579), Wisconsin (243,441), Florida (217,526) and Minnesota (207,071). The census also collected data on workers and irrigation.
