New York State Potato Seed Report 2023
Certified seed potato acres in New York State increased by 100 acres in 2023 from last year with 881 total acres inspected. The Lamoka and Waneta varieties represented the largest acreages in the state with 277.8 and 179.6 acres inspected respectively. Some growers experienced a very wet harvest season this year and have expressed some concerns about tuber health during long-term storage.
The winter test for New York- certified potato crop will not be conducted as a winter grow-out in Hawaii this year. Instead, NYSIP has opted to have all seed lab tested at the Maine Potato Disease Lab. Ever-increasing costs, along with the need to streamline and increase precision on disease testing, prompted this decision.
