Next-Generation Crop Protection Technology Gives Potato Growers Freedom to Farm
(Sponsored) Farmers today face pressure from more sources than ever before: consumer demands, regulatory changes, volatile markets, pest resistance and the unpredictable forces of Mother Nature.
Crop protection technology has struggled to keep pace with insect control and resistance management. Farmers now have better choices.
Arino™ is a novel and innovative liquid insecticide powered by RinoTec™ Technology for the management of nematodes, wireworms, white grubs, mealybugs and mites. Applied at planting, it can protect roots from damage, reduces costly tuber blemishes, offers a zero-day pre-harvest interval and helps ensure higher yield quality, as seen in research trials.
Backed by six years of university trials, Arino bridges the gap between superior yield protection and sustainable farming practices. Tom Kuhar, Ph.D., professor of entomology at Virginia Tech, recently conducted bioassays and field trials on Arino in nematodes and wireworms with his Ph.D. students.
“It provided very comparable control with some of the industry standards that we have right now,” Kuhar said. “It has basically changed the way I feel about biologicals as an option for very difficult pest like wireworms.”
Alan Schreiber, Ph.D., president of Agriculture Development Group, Inc., has been testing Arino in the Columbia Basin of Washington, where potato growers face four species of nematodes—stubby root, lesion, northern root-knot and Columbia root-knot.
“Arino works on all of those,” said Schreiber. “And if it works in our area, it’s going to work anywhere in the United States.”
Arino empowers U.S. potato growers and their partners with the freedom to farm by delivering high-performance, broad-spectrum soil pest control through an award-winning, sustainable technology. As an EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Award winner for Design of Safer and Degradable Chemicals, Arino provides a unique mode of action to manage resistance while effectively controlling wireworms and white grubs, and suppressing yield-robbing nematodes.
“Arino has a unique set of characteristics. It’s efficacious. It’s equal to, or cheaper than, the standard products. It’s safer than the standard products,” said Schreiber. “It has a better PHI and REI, and it’s exempt from MRLs. Tolerances, so you don’t have to worry about MRLs. Arino is also pretty shelf-stable for a biological product that doesn’t require any special handling or refrigeration. It’s a stable, rugged product.”
Arino is easy to handle, saving farmers time, money and stress. It provides effective pest control with minimal PPE requirements and a four-hour reentry window after application. This helps ensure that growers can efficiently control wireworms and nematodes while providing packers and shippers with a clear, documented commitment to sustainability and food safety.
