Report forecasts dip in Canadian potato production

Canadian growers are forecast to produce 122.2 million cwt of potatoes in 2025 — 6 million cwt, or 4.7%, less than the country produced last year.

Growing conditions across Canada have been mixed during the past month. Prince Edward Island and parts of New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario did not receive necessary rain to finish this year’s potato crop, according to a North American Potato Market News report.

Chip potato supplies are expected to be down in Ontario and Quebec, according to the report, and supplies also could be tight in PEI and New Brunswick.

Combined production the four major table stock-producing provinces could be down 8.9% or more, according to NAPMN, while table stock production in the Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) and British Columbia could increase. U.S. demand for Canadian table potatoes may decrease because of a large U.S. crop and low prices.

US states

Growers in Michigan have started storing chip potatoes, after 10 days of cool weather ideal for harvesting. With temperatures warming, rain could improve harvest conditions and prevent pressure bruise problems in storage. Reports indicate that Michigan’s early chip potato yields have been average, according to the Michigan Potato Industry Commission.

In Minnesota, harvest is at 44%, ahead of the five-year average of 35%, according to the USDA Potato Progress and Condition Report for the week ending Sept. 14. Thirty percent of the crop is in excellent condition, 67% in good condition and 3% in fair.

In North Dakota, harvest is at 24% — slightly behind the five-year average of 26%, according to the report. Eleven percent of the crop is in good condition, with 61% in good and 28% in fair.
