Feb 21, 2024Netherlands-based potato cooperative to acquire The Potato Company
Netherlands-based potato cooperative Agrico has declared its intention to acquire the seed potato activities of The Potato Company, a Dutch company that coordinates the introduction and sale of new potato varieties in more than 60 countries.
The acquisition will allow Agrico to bolster its presence in the Western Europe seed potato market, according to a news release.
“This allows us to focus even more strongly on the sales and development of monopoly varieties,” Agrico CEO Mark Zuidhof said in the release.
“TPC’s distribution network to more than 60 countries is also an excellent addition to our sales channels.”
TPC, founded in 2004, has more than 450 hectares of seed potatoes, grown on a pool contract basis, according to the release. Its distribution network includes both its monopoly and free trade varieties.
The company, which specializes in developing potato varieties with broad potato cyst nematode resistance, will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Agrico.
“TPC, as a second sales channel within the Agrico group, will also be able to further evolve its international activities,” TPC owner Gaby Stet said in the release.
“Along with Agrico, we will be able to continue to guarantee the return for our growers and, in terms of sales, we will remain visible under the identity of TPC.”
A transaction timetable was not specified.
