Nov 11, 2019Michigan looks to have record-level potato yields, increased production
Potato yields are expected to reach record numbers in Michigan for the 2019 growing season.
According to the USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS)’s Great Lakes office, yields project at 410 cwt per acre. That would be up 30 cwt per acre from last year and 40 cwt from two years ago. The previous record is 390 cwt per acre, which was set in 2015.
With 47,500 of the 49,000 acres planted having been harvested, overall production estimates look to be 19.475 million cwt, which would be a 6% increase from last year.
The majority of Michigan-grown potatoes, approximately 70%, go to chip makers.
