Michigan potato crop expected to see small uptick

Michigan’s 2018 potato crop is projected to see a small uptick, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Great Lakes Regional Office.

The USDA projects Michigan’s crop to come in at 17.39 million hundredweight (cwt), which is a 1.0 percent increase from 2017. State growers planted 48,000 acres, of which 47,000 were harvested. The increase in production looks to be a direct result of the added acreage, as the average yield — 370 cwt per acre — is on par with each of the past two years.

Michigan’s initial potato stock estimate is scheduled for Dec. 19.

Michigan traditionally ranks among the top 10 states for potato production, including seventh in 2017.
