Feb 23, 2009Walther Farms to Auction Original Family Farm Property
Walther Farms, the potato farming giant that started with a few acres of vegetables in the 1940s, will sell approximately 784 acres — including the family’s original farm property — at auction March 16, as a result of the family’s increasing focus on the potato business, according to Schrader Auction Co., of Columbia City, Ind., the company handling the sale.
The sale includes seven farms between Saginaw and Flint, Mich., that are well tiled and irrigated. The sale also includes several sites suited for commercial, recreational and development, as well as for building.
There are 27 different tracts, ranging from 1.2 acres to 228 acres. Bidders can purchase individual tracts or a combinations of tracts, according to the auction house.
Walther Farms was named Frito-Lay’s National Potato Supplier of the Year in 2008, and has extensive operations in Michigan, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana and Mexico, but the family’s roots are in the Birch Run area, where the family started as hobby farmers growing vegetables.
