Samples needed for potato seed trials

Washington State University (WSU) is seeking commercial potato seed samples for the 2016 Washington Seed Lot Trial. The university is requesting 50-pound samples of 2-4 ounce seed. If applicable, a representative amount of rotten tubers can be included. Seed over 6 ounces will not be accepted.

Sampling the first (or last) 300 seed from the truck is not likely to provide a representative sample of the lot, WSU said. Sample tags may be obtained by calling the Potato Commission at 509-765-8845.

Seed samples may be taken to the WSU Othello Research Unit. For sample pick up and any questions regarding the seed lot trials call:

  • South Basin: Tim Waters (509-545-3511), Mark Pavek (509-335-6861), or Zack Holden (509-335-3452)
  • North Basin: Carrie Huffman Wohleb (509-754-2011 x.4313), Mark Pavek (509-335-6861), or Zack Holden (509-335-3452)
  • Westside: Don McMoran (360-428-4270), Mark Pavek (509-335-6861), or Zack Holden (509-335-3452)

In the North Basin, one seed “drop-off” has been established at Qualls Ag Labs between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, contact Mick Qualls at 509-787-4210 ext. 16. Call the numbers above to arrange additional pick up sites. Samples will be picked up by 2 p.m. the day before each planting date. Growers planting in early March should drop their samples off at the Othello Research Unit or store the samples and call the numbers above for pick up.

The seed lot planting dates for 2016 are March 22, April 5, April 19. A late planting is scheduled for May 3.
